چکیده

This paper introduces a new hard-/ and software system for the interactive sonification of sports movement involving armand leg movements. Two different sonifications are designed to convey rhythmical patterns that become auditory gestalt so that listeners can identify features of the underlying coordinated movement. The Sonification is designed for the application to enable visually impaired users to participate in aerobics exercises, and also to enhance the perception of movements for sighted participants, which is useful for instance if the scene is occluded or the head posture is incompatible with the observation of the instructor or fitness professional who shows the practices in parallel. Furthermore, the system allows to monitor fine couplings in arm/leg coordination while jogging, as auditory feedback may help stabilizing the movement pattern. We present the sensing system, two sonification designs, and interaction examples that lead to coordination-specific sound gestalts. Finally, some qualitative observations are reported from the first uses of the prototype.

Interactive Sonification of Spontaneous Movement of Children—Cross-Modal Mapping and the Perception of Body Movement Qualities through Sound

In this paper we present three studies focusing on the effect of different sound models in interactive sonification of bodily movement. We hypothesized that a sound model characterized by continuous smooth sounds would be associated with other movement characteristics than a model characterized by abrupt variation in amplitude and that these associations could be reflected in spontaneous moveme...

Learning Musical Instrument Skills Through Interactive Sonification

Interactive visualisation methods have been used to understand realtime acoustic analysis for the purpose of learning musical skills. However, interactive sonification has not often been considered, perhaps because it is assumed the musician cannot concentrate simultaneously on two sounds – their instrument’s sound, and the sonified information. However, whilst some finesse is required in desig...

Interactive sonification of complex data

In this paper we present two experiments on implementing interaction in sonification displays: the first focuses on recorded data (interactive navigation) and the second on data gathered in real time (auditory feedback). Complex synthesised data are explored in the first experiment to evaluate how well the known characteristics present in the data are distinguished using different interaction m...

Perceptual Effects of Auditory Information about Own and Other Movements

In sport accurate predictions of other persons’ movements are essential. Former studies have shown that predictions can be enhanced by mapping movements onto sound (sonification) and providing audiovisual feedback [1]. The present study investigated behavioral mechanisms of movement sonification and scrutinized whether effects of own movements and those of other persons can be predicted just by...

The Elbow Piano: Sonification of Piano Playing Movements

The Elbow Piano distinguishes two types of piano touch: a touch with movement in the elbow joint and a touch without. A played note is first mapped to the left or right hand by visual tracking. Custom-built goniometers attached to the player's arms are used to detect the type of touch. The two different types of touches are sonified by different instrument sounds. This gives the player an incre...
